El Real Tex-Mex Café Proves That the Old Ways Are Worth Saving

There is a moment, about three bites into a plate of cheese enchiladas at El Real Tex-Mex Café, when you stop worrying about what is trendy and start remembering why you loved food in the first place. That moment is real, it is reliable, and it happens every single time I walk through the doors of this Montrose institution.

El Real occupies a beautifully restored 1939 building on Westheimer that once housed a movie theater. The bones of the place — high ceilings, warm lighting, vintage Texas movie posters, and a gorgeous back bar that looks like it has poured a million cold Lone Stars — set the stage for exactly the kind of meal you came here to have. You are not here for molecular gastronomy or a tasting menu with eleven courses. You are here for Tex-Mex the way it was meant to be eaten: generous, unapologetic, and deeply satisfying.

The man behind El Real is Robb Walsh, a James Beard Award–nominated food writer and one of the most serious students of Tex-Mex history in the country. He opened this place with restaurateur Bryan Caswell because he believed — correctly — that authentic old-school Tex-Mex deserved a proper home. The menu is a love letter to the canon: combination plates loaded with tamales, chili con carne, and rice and beans that taste like someone’s grandmother made them; puffy tacos that arrive at the table puffed and golden and slightly dangerous; and a bowl of chili con queso that should be classified as a controlled substance.

That queso, by the way, is made with Velveeta and Ro-Tel tomatoes, and I say that with complete and total respect. Walsh has written extensively about the history of queso, and he understands that the glory of Tex-Mex lies in embracing what it actually is, not what food snobs think it should be. The result is a dip so warm, so perfectly seasoned, and so absolutely right that you will find yourself scraping the bowl with the last of the chips while your dining companion pretends not to notice.

The margaritas here are the classic frozen variety — none of that craft cocktail hand-wringing — and they are exactly what you want when the Houston summer is doing its worst outside. Order a round and settle in.

El Real draws a genuinely mixed crowd: families from the neighborhood, couples on first dates, longtime Houstonians who have been coming since the day it opened, and out-of-towners who got the right tip from a local. The vibe is festive without being loud to the point of exhaustion, and the service has that easy confidence that comes from a staff that believes in what they are serving.

Parking along Westheimer can test your patience on a Friday night, so plan accordingly or grab a rideshare and free yourself from the whole enterprise. Either way, get there hungry. Tex-Mex this honest and this good is not something you want to approach at half measure. El Real is the real deal — and Houston is lucky to have it.
