Dallas Council Weighs Costs and Security for Upcoming Republican Midterm Convention

During a City Council Finance Committee hearing, Dallas leaders outlined preparations for a first‑of‑its‑kind Republican midterm convention scheduled for Sept. 9‑10 at the American Airlines Center. The event, expected to draw thousands of Republicans and feature former President Donald Trump and other federal officials, will involve four city departments: the Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire‑Rescue, Special Events, and Transportation.

Preliminary Cost Estimates

City staff presented an early estimate that police services could cost up to $1.8 million, while the Transportation and Public Works Department might spend as much as $14,000. No figures have yet been provided by Special Events or Fire‑Rescue. Officials emphasized that the police estimate is preliminary and subject to daily adjustments.

Council Concerns Over Budget Impact

Several council members voiced apprehension about the financial burden on a city already facing a budget deficit. Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Maxie Johnson, who also serves as a pastor, asked for a clear accounting of the expected expenses, stating, “We’re in a deficit budget. We shouldn’t be fronting any kind of money without knowing the exact cost.”

Other members questioned whether the city would receive reimbursement from the federal government or the convention’s organizing committee. The Dallas Morning News reported that the committee has raised $45 million, but it remains unclear how much of that will offset local expenditures.

Security Considerations

Security was another focal point of the discussion. Council Member Cara Mendelsohn reminded the body of Dallas’ history, noting the city’s past experience with presidential assassinations and recent attempts on the current president’s life. She urged comprehensive measures to protect everyone from the president to protesters, saying, “We don’t want this. I want you to do everything possible to keep everybody, absolutely everybody, safe.”

Potential Reimbursements

The city may be reimbursed for some costs by donors to the organizing committee, though the exact mechanisms and timelines have not been detailed. Council members indicated they will continue to monitor the situation and seek assurances before committing additional funds.

Looking Ahead

As Dallas prepares for the convention, the council’s scrutiny reflects broader concerns about fiscal responsibility and public safety in a city navigating a budget shortfall. The final cost figures and reimbursement agreements will likely be revisited in upcoming council sessions, ensuring that taxpayers are fully informed before any further commitments are made.
