A cyclosporiasis outbreak is being investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 31 states, including Florida. The parasitic infection affects the gastrointestinal tract and leads to diarrheal illness, usually transmitted by eating contaminated food or drinking water.
Local Impact
According to the CDC, 843 cases have been reported in the United States since May 1, with 86 hospitalizations. In Florida, 11 to 30 people have been reported sick. Dr. Kleper De Almeida, an infectious diseases and internal medicine specialist with Palm Beach Health Network, advises families to practice good hygiene to protect themselves.
De Almeida recommends thoroughly washing produce with a diluted bleach or vinegar mixture. If you start to feel sick, it’s best to seek medical help. Your doctor will likely be aware of the current outbreak and can provide the necessary tests and medication to treat cyclosporiasis.
