Greg Gee, a New Haven native, has been selling watermelons on Whalley Avenue every summer. He drives his truck back and forth between North Carolina and New Haven, bringing hundreds of watermelons at a time.
Watermelon Varieties
Gee sells two types of watermelons: ‘Black Diamond’ and ‘Stars ‘n’ Stripes’. The ‘Black Diamond’ watermelon is a yellow variety grown in North Carolina. Gee said he usually sells out of his watermelons within a week.
Gee has been selling watermelons on Whalley Avenue for years and has built a loyal customer base. He sells his watermelons whole, without any special permit from the city, and offers free samples to spread the word about his business.
Customers praise Gee’s watermelons, saying they are ‘juicy’ and ‘sweet’. One customer, Kenny Tremble, said he buys watermelons from Gee two or three times a week because they are ‘that good’.
