CT Politics News: Debates and Voting

Josh Elliott, after winning approval for $3.75 million in public financing for his campaign, urged Democrats to demand two things of Gov. Ned Lamont: commit to support the winner of the primary and agree to a series of debates. Elliott stated that any public official asking to keep their job should agree to at least three debates.

Trump Administration Pressures States on Voting Rules

The Trump administration is applying pressure on states to change voting rules, with the Justice Department sending a letter to Connecticut’s secretary of the state’s office stating that elections officials could face criminal prosecution if they don’t take certain actions. Attorney General William Tong called it another attempt to manipulate and micromanage how Connecticut votes.

President Donald Trump also announced that Stratford-based Sikorsky will pay for a new helipad at the White House, which was met with criticism from Connecticut’s congressional delegation. They accused Trump of rushing to complete the project without providing transparency.

Other CT Politics News

The Connecticut Democratic Party released a statement criticizing Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Fazio’s energy plans, which aim to reduce energy bills by 15% to 20%. Fazio has long advocated for reducing customers’ bills by removing state-mandated programs that contribute to the public benefits charge.

Additionally, the Department of Children and Families announced that staff emails had been hacked in a phishing incident, and Comptroller Sean Scanlon announced that 17 new municipal groups signed up for the Connecticut Partnership Plan, which provides healthcare coverage to public employees.
