Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont joined tenants and lawmakers in Hartford to call on corporate landlord Alpha Capital to improve conditions at its properties and address long-standing concerns.

Eviction Reform

Lamont pledged to push for eviction reform legislation again during next year’s General Assembly session, specifically just-cause eviction. The proposal faces obstacles, as nearly one out of five lawmakers is a landlord.

Tenants raised concerns about eviction, including no-fault evictions, which make up about 11% of all evictions in Connecticut. At one of Alpha Capital’s properties in Middletown, nearly all tenants were evicted last fall.

Alpha Capital’s CEO, Tyler Smith, stated that the company is committed to providing safe, quality housing and investing in communities throughout Connecticut. However, tenants described difficulties with maintenance issues, rent hikes, and communication with their landlord.

Lawmakers and tenants are pushing for change, with Senate Bill 257, which would have ended no-fault or lapse-of-time evictions, dying without a vote in either chamber this year.
