Ride the Sky: Why Durango’s Hog Back Trail Will Rearrange Your Sense of Wonder

There is a moment on the Hogsback Trail when the scrub oak parts just enough and the entire Animas Valley unfolds below you like a map someone left out in the sun to dry. The La Plata Mountains crowd the western horizon, the red sandstone ridgeline drops away at your feet, and Durango hums quietly a few hundred feet below. You will stop walking. You will not be able to help it.

Horse Gulch Open Space sits on the southeastern edge of Durango, practically within shouting distance of downtown. You can park at the main trailhead off East Third Avenue, lace up your boots, and be climbing through high desert terrain within minutes of leaving your hotel room. That accessibility is part of the magic. This is not a day-trip destination requiring a packed cooler and a full tank of gas. It is the kind of trail you stumble onto Tuesday afternoon because the light looked good and your legs needed moving.

The Hogsback Trail itself runs along a dramatic sandstone fin that gives the whole open space its personality. The ridge is narrow in places, the exposure is genuine, and the views are frankly disproportionate to the effort required to earn them. A moderate out-and-back from the trailhead to the top of the hogback covers roughly four miles with about 800 feet of elevation gain. That is enough climbing to feel righteous about, but not so much that your knees file a formal complaint afterward.

The trail system inside Horse Gulch is wonderfully interconnected. Hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers all share the network, so expect to step aside for a focused rider bombing downhill on Telegraph or Cuchillo. There is an easy camaraderie out here — a nod, a quick smile, a mutual appreciation for the fact that everyone chose to spend their afternoon on a dirt path instead of a couch. The trail culture in Durango is genuinely welcoming, and Horse Gulch is where you feel it most clearly.

Sunrise and late afternoon visits reward you with golden light raking across the sandstone, turning the whole ridge a deep amber. Bring water — the exposure on the hogback means wind and sun in equal measure — and wear real shoes. The rock surface is grippy but uneven, and a twisted ankle up on the fin is a long hobble back down.

Dogs are welcome on leash, the trail is free and open year-round, and the parking area rarely fills beyond capacity except on peak weekend mornings. If you arrive and the lot is crowded, a short walk along Third Avenue connects to the trailhead just as easily.

Durango earns its outdoor reputation on trails like this one. Not because it is extreme or obscure, but because it is right here, beautiful without apology, and completely free to anyone willing to show up and walk toward the view.
