COVID-19 cases rise in Bexar County as schools reopen

Local hospitals across Bexar County are seeing a noticeable increase in COVID-19 cases as the new school year gets underway, according to Dr. Jason Bowling, chief epidemiologist for University Health and professor of medicine and infectious diseases at UT Health San Antonio.

Why the rise matters

For the third consecutive year, COVID-19 cases traditionally dip during the late summer months. This year, however, the decline has stalled, prompting experts to warn that respiratory illnesses may no longer be confined to the typical winter flu season.

“We are seeing COVID cases increase here in Bexar County,” Dr. Bowling said. “If there’s enough disease transmitting that quickly, a brief break might decrease some of the transmission and reduce the risk of further infections.”

Impact on schools

The San Perlita Independent School District in the Rio Grande Valley temporarily closed after a rapid rise in COVID-19 cases, illustrating how quickly an outbreak can affect smaller schools. In contrast, San Antonio-area districts have not yet reported enough illness among staff or students to consider closures.

Dr. Bowling emphasized that parents play a critical role in limiting spread. “Teach your kids good hygiene,” he advised. “Hand washing is still a top way to keep from getting sick.” He recommended washing hands after using the restroom, before meals, and after coughing or sneezing. Carrying a small bottle of hand sanitizer can help when a sink isn’t readily available.

When to keep children home

Families should keep children with a high fever or persistent cough at home. “If your kid is sick, please don’t send them to school,” Dr. Bowling said. “You’re doing your civic duty by not sending them in with the other kids that aren’t sick because we know how rapidly infections can transmit in the school classroom.”

Vaccination update

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved this year’s COVID-19 vaccine formula on Thursday. While officials have not issued a specific recommendation on who should receive the vaccine, Dr. Bowling urged families to consult their doctors or pediatricians to determine whether vaccination is appropriate for them.

What families can do now

  • Ensure children wash their hands regularly and use sanitizer when needed.
  • Keep sick children at home until they are fever‑free for at least 24 hours without medication.
  • Discuss vaccination options with a trusted healthcare provider.
  • Stay informed about local health department alerts and school communications.

By taking these practical steps, Bexar County residents can help curb the spread of COVID-19 and protect vulnerable community members as the school year progresses.
