Shaunne Hall donated her kidney to her husband, Monte Hall, after his unexpected health challenges, deepening the meaning of their wedding vows.
A Love Story Born at Winston-Salem State University
The couple’s love story began at Winston-Salem State University in 1996, where they first met as college friends. Years later, their friendship grew into an unbreakable bond, tested by unforeseen health challenges.
During a routine annual check-up, Monte learned his kidneys were failing. Before he could move forward with a kidney transplant, doctors discovered an aortic aneurysm, requiring emergency heart surgery.
Shaunne began the process to see if she could donate one of her kidneys. When their anniversary arrived, Shaunne surprised Monte with the news that she was his donor.
On July 13, the couple underwent surgery, with their operating rooms on the same floor and their procedures just 30 minutes apart. Despite the circumstances, they found moments of humor.
The Halls credit their family and friends for helping them through the journey, but when fear crept in, they leaned on each other and their faith. “It’s only one F in the alphabet. Are you going to live by faith or fear? So we definitely lived by faith, but our faith was tested,” Monte Hall said.
Both Shaunne and Monte are recovering well and looking forward to getting back to full health. They encourage others to know their family medical history and stay up to date on regular check-ups.
