Cornyn Stands Firm on Negative Ads in Texas GOP Senate Runoff

In the heated Texas GOP Senate runoff, Senator John Cornyn has decided to continue his negative advertising campaign against opponent Ken Paxton, despite calls from Texas GOP Chairman Abraham George to end such tactics. George urged both candidates to focus on unity and prepare for the upcoming November elections, emphasizing the need for a positive campaign conclusion.

Calls for Unity

Chairman George took to social media platform X to express his concerns, stating, “As Chairman of the Texas GOP, I’m calling on both Senate candidates to pull all negative advertising. It’s time to start preparing for November, and we can finish this runoff campaign on a positive note from both sides.”

Ken Paxton, who has recently been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, quickly agreed to George’s request. Paxton announced a shift in his campaign’s television advertising strategy, aiming to end on a positive note and focus on defeating the Democratic opponent in the fall elections. “We have already changed our TV ad traffic starting today to ensure our campaign ends on a positive note and that we can focus on beating the leftist lunatic in the fall,” Paxton wrote on X.

Cornyn’s Response

Despite the call for unity, Cornyn remains steadfast in his approach. He responded on X, “We are going to continue to tell the truth about Paxton. He’s escaped accountability for too long. Judgment day is coming.” Cornyn’s decision comes just days after Trump’s endorsement of Paxton, which many see as a significant setback for Cornyn’s campaign.

In his endorsement, Trump praised Paxton as an “America First Patriot” and a “true MAGA Warrior,” while criticizing Cornyn for his delayed support during Trump’s presidential campaigns. In response, Cornyn highlighted his strong relationship with Trump, noting his consistent support during Trump’s terms and emphasizing the importance of electability for the GOP in November.

Expensive Campaign

The runoff between Cornyn and Paxton has become one of the most expensive Republican Senate primaries in the nation, with both campaigns and external groups spending tens of millions on advertising and voter outreach. Early voting continues through Friday, with Election Day set for May 26.
