Connecticut homeowners warned to budget for higher heating oil prices this winter

Connecticut families who rely on heating oil to keep their homes warm may see a noticeable jump in their winter bills. Prices are roughly $1.50 per gallon higher than this time last year, a rise that could add about $1,500 to the cost of filling a typical 1,000‑gallon tank.

Experts advise early budgeting and cost‑management options

Chris Herb, president of the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association, attributes the increase to ongoing global conflicts, specifically the Russia‑Ukraine war and the war with Iran. “These are certainly challenging times,” Herb said, adding that no one can predict exactly how prices will move forward.

Given the uncertainty, Herb recommends that homeowners talk with their local oil dealers about budgeting tools. While a fixed‑price contract may not suit everyone this year, many dealers offer budget plans or other mechanisms to spread costs more evenly throughout the year.

Long‑time users share budgeting success

In Newington, resident Steve Greenslade said he has used a budget plan for decades. “I know what my budget is every month, I know what I need to pay every month, and I can pay ahead if I have to,” he explained.

State assistance remains limited amid rising costs

Connecticut’s energy assistance program will open applications on September 1. Although federal funding received a modest increase, state officials warn that the same amount of money will purchase roughly half the oil it could previously buy. State Senator Norm Needleman, chair of the Energy and Technology Committee, said the state will closely monitor both the funding and winter weather conditions.

“We are looking at the same amount of dollars buying roughly half the amount of oil,” Needleman said, noting that the severity of the upcoming winter will affect how far assistance can stretch.

Homeowners can reduce consumption with simple steps

Beyond budgeting, residents can lower their heating oil use through efficiency upgrades. Adding insulation, sealing drafts and scheduling a professional tune‑up before winter can cut consumption by up to 10%, according to Herb.

“When prices are rising, if you can do something to use less fuel… that puts money back in your pocket,” Herb said.

By planning ahead, exploring payment options and improving home efficiency, Connecticut households can better manage the impact of higher heating oil prices this winter.
