Coconut Creek Police Prevent Elderly Woman from Losing More Money in Scam

In Coconut Creek, an 85-year-old woman was saved from further financial loss after falling victim to a scam that cost her $3,500. The local police stepped in after her family alerted them to the situation, preventing her from sending more money to the scammers.

Police Intervention

According to the Coconut Creek Police Department, the woman had already mailed money several times before they intervened. Body camera footage captured the moment officers tried to stop her from giving away more of her savings. An officer can be heard explaining to the woman, “You are being scammed,” after receiving calls from her concerned daughter.

The woman had been convinced she was claiming prize money, a common tactic used by scammers who target seniors. She described the process of preparing one of the payments, which involved writing a check, cashing it at the bank, and mailing it. Officers also discovered she was planning to hand-deliver more money to an unknown person at a bank in Pompano Beach.

Targeting the Vulnerable

Police highlighted that seniors are often targeted by such schemes because they may be more isolated and willing to engage with unknown callers. The officer warned, “There is no way in this incident that you are going to get money, but you are going to lose money if you give it to somebody.”

This incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and family involvement in protecting vulnerable individuals from scams. The Coconut Creek Police Department continues to work with families to prevent such financial exploitation.
