CNN corrects claim that Trump mail‑in voting order would affect overseas ballots

During Monday’s edition of The Situation Room, CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer issued a correction after he incorrectly implied that the Trump administration’s recent crackdown on mail‑in voting would affect U.S. service members and diplomats stationed abroad.

Blitzer’s original segment featured Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, discussing a lawsuit filed by the Commonwealth and other blue states to block President Trump’s March executive order that tightens mail‑in voting rules. The governor warned that the administration’s actions aim to intimidate voters and undermine a safe, secure voting method.

When Blitzer asked about the impact on military personnel, Spanberger affirmed that many service members rely on mail‑in ballots while overseas. Blitzer then suggested those ballots might be jeopardized by the new directives.

Correction and clarification

At the close of the program, Blitzer posted a “quick note of clarification,” stating, “We discussed legal challenges to the Trump administration’s directives for the Postal Service on mail‑in voting. A comment I made suggested that U.S. military and overseas voters’ ballots would be impacted by these directives. I want to be clear right now: those ballots are exempt from the Postal Service’s new rules implementing the president’s March executive order.” He added that the Uniformed and Overseas Absentee Voting Act specifically protects those voters.

A CNN spokesperson referenced Blitzer’s remarks but declined to comment further on the mistake.

The clarification comes as federal courts continue to scrutinize the administration’s efforts to limit mail‑in voting, with a recent temporary restraining order halting enforcement of the order pending further litigation.
