Cleveland residents can make a lasting contribution to their city by joining the effort to restore its tree canopy. The Sherwick Tree Steward Training Program, run by Western Reserve Land Conservancy, teaches people how to plant and care for trees in the city. Since 2020, stewards have planted and helped maintain over 2,100 trees.
Training Program Details
The program has two participation options: online or in-person instruction. The deadline to apply for online classes is August 13, with sessions held on Zoom on August 17 and 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. The deadline to apply for in-person classes is August 26, with classes meeting at the Midtown Collaboration Center on September 2 and 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Both options cover the urban forestry landscape in Cleveland, basic tree biology, and tips for engaging with other residents. The second session focuses on practical tree stewardship skills, including tree selection and care. The program culminates in a hands-on planting lab on a Saturday morning in the fall.
