Council Member Richard Starr hosted a senior prom at Platform 13, an event space in Cleveland. The event featured a Harlem Renaissance theme, with a live band and DJ playing music that got people on the dance floor.

A Night to Remember

Seniors from local high-rise apartment buildings were treated to a delicious meal and a night of dancing. The event was organized by Starr and his staff, who spent six months putting it together. Luxury coaches picked up seniors from their apartment buildings and brought them to the event.

Inside the venue, tables were stacked with food, including perch, fried chicken, and cupcakes. Several seniors said it was their first time attending an event like this. Veronica Triplett came out for the music, especially the chance to do some line dancing.

Yvonne Salters, a familiar face in Ward 5, said she attends Starr’s events because she feels he shows up for his residents in return. Sheila Freeman, out for her first time, said she tries to make it to other community events when she can.

The event also provided resources for seniors, including information on home repair, senior safety, and the Cleveland Care Call line. A representative from the Third Police District was also on hand to provide information and support.

A Community Comes Together

For Starr, the event was part of a bigger push to reach seniors where they are. He told the crowd he’s already looking at hosting a karaoke night next and floated the idea of outdoor tournaments down the line.

By the end of the night, seniors who’d spent the evening on their feet were leaving with big smiles on their faces. As one attendee said, ‘Too bad for you’ to those who didn’t come out to enjoy the night.
