Stage II fire restrictions will take effect on the Mount Taylor Ranger District in Cibola National Forest beginning Thursday, June 18, at 8 a.m. Forest officials cited increased wildfire risk and severe fire weather conditions.
The restrictions are intended to reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires and will remain in effect through Aug. 31. Under the order, campfires, charcoal fires, coal and briquette fires are prohibited. Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles, buildings, developed recreation sites, or cleared areas free of flammable materials.
Restrictions and Prohibitions
The order also prohibits off-road vehicle use on National Forest System lands and trails, except in designated parking areas. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., operating generators, chainsaws and other combustion-powered equipment, as well as welding and blasting activities, is prohibited unless specifically exempted.
Violations may result in fines of up to $5,000 for individuals, $10,000 for organizations, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. Stage I restrictions remain in effect on other Cibola National Forest ranger districts.
