Chicago Health Inspectors Suspend License of Iron Age Korean Steakhouse in Wicker Park

Chicago health officials have taken decisive action against a popular Korean steakhouse in the Wicker Park neighborhood. On Thursday, the Chicago Department of Public Health suspended the operating license of Iron Age Korean Steakhouse, located at 1265 N. Milwaukee Avenue, after a routine inspection uncovered serious sanitary violations.

Inspection findings

The inspection report, posted on the city’s public health database, detailed that inspectors found “over 500” rat droppings throughout the kitchen, dishwashing area, and dining room. In addition, investigators observed “black slime” dripping into an ice machine that provides ice for customer consumption. The presence of such contaminants poses a direct risk to public health and violates state food‑safety codes.

Further deficiencies noted in the report included the absence of a required chemical test kit on site, inadequate lighting in a mop closet, and incomplete food‑handler certifications for several employees. These shortcomings indicate a broader lapse in the restaurant’s compliance with basic health and safety standards.

Required corrective actions

According to the Department of Public Health, Iron Age must “eliminate all evidence of pest activity” and thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas before the license can be reinstated. The restaurant will also need to address the missing chemical test kit, improve lighting in storage areas, and ensure that all staff possess up‑to‑date food‑handler certificates.

Management of Iron Age Korean Steakhouse was not reachable for comment at the time of writing.

Background on the establishment

Iron Age opened its Wicker Park location in 2019, replacing the former Tozi Korean BBQ. The chain also operates a location in suburban Glenview and several sites across Georgia and the East Coast. The recent closure marks the first major health‑related shutdown for the brand in Chicago.

Impact on the community

Wicker Park residents and patrons who frequent the restaurant will need to seek alternative dining options while the establishment addresses the violations. The city’s swift response underscores its commitment to protecting public health and maintaining high standards for food‑service establishments throughout Chicago.

City officials encourage diners to stay informed about health inspection results, which are publicly available online, and to report any concerns about food safety to the Department of Public Health.
