Chic Boutique offers free formal wear to Grapevine‑Colleyville students for homecoming

Grapevine‑Colleyville Independent School District is helping families keep homecoming and prom costs down by partnering with the local nonprofit Chic Boutique. The boutique operates as a free formal‑wear resource for every student in the district, accepting gently used dresses and now offering menswear as well.

How the program works

Chic Boutique relies on community members who donate their gently used gowns, tuxedos, shoes and accessories. Students can walk into the boutique at the GCISD Administration Building during standard business hours, browse the inventory and select an outfit without providing any proof of income, identification or other documentation. As Kira Allen‑Lowe, co‑founder of the boutique, explains, “We do not ask for income requirements or anything else. Students are able to come here and shop without any IDs or anything like that.”

Impact on students

Last year the boutique supplied 107 dresses to students across the district. Allen‑Lowe says the service is a lifeline for many who would otherwise forgo attending formal events. “It’s just the idea of seeing the instant gratification in the kids’ faces when they find the ‘it’ dress, and knowing they don’t have to pay astronomical prices for it,” she said.

The addition of menswear expands the reach of the program, ensuring that boys who need tuxedos or dress shirts also have a free option. The boutique’s open‑door policy means any student, regardless of family income, can participate.

Community involvement

Chic Boutique is run by Allen‑Lowe and her business partner, Jenny Royal, who treat the effort as a “love project” rather than a side gig. The initiative reflects the district’s broader commitment to supporting families and preserving the tradition of formal school events without placing a financial burden on parents.

Community members who have extra formal attire are encouraged to drop donations at the main reception of the GCISD Administration Building. By recycling gently used garments, the boutique not only saves families money but also reduces waste.

Looking ahead

With homecoming season already underway, the boutique expects a steady flow of students seeking dresses and tuxedos. The partnership between the district and Chic Boutique demonstrates how local nonprofits and schools can collaborate to uphold cherished traditions while honoring the values of family stewardship and community generosity.
