Caddo County families begin rebuilding after Gracemont wildfire destroys nine homes

When the Gracemont wildfire ignited late Sunday night, it quickly spread across more than 2,600 acres of rural Caddo County, Oklahoma. By early Monday morning the blaze had completely destroyed nine homes, leaving dozens of families without shelter and countless personal belongings.

Home loss and personal tragedy

One of the hardest‑hit homeowners, Denea Wylie, was away in Kentucky when the fire started. She returned to find her longtime residence reduced to a charred shed and a partially melted car. “It was a shock. We have nothing,” Wylie said, describing the devastation of losing decades of memories.

“All of our photos, our memories, our physical memories, they’re just gone,” she added, emphasizing the emotional weight of the loss beyond the physical structure.

Community response and faith‑filled encouragement

Despite the heartbreak, Wylie expressed gratitude for the people who remain by her side. She highlighted the importance of family, noting that her husband, three sons and their animals are still safe. “Hug your family, hug your friends, appreciate them. Tell them how much you love them and how much you care for them,” she urged other residents.

The outpouring of support has been swift. Local volunteers, faith‑based groups and neighboring families have organized donation drives, offering food, clothing and temporary shelter to those displaced. “We’re seeing the best of our community step up,” said a county emergency manager who declined to be named.

Cause and containment efforts

Officials have identified a lawn mower as the likely ignition source of the wildfire. Fire crews from the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, the Caddo County Sheriff’s Office and several volunteer fire departments have been on the scene around the clock. As of the latest update, the fire is about 20 % contained, with crews continuing to mop up hotspots and protect remaining structures.

“Our priority is to keep the fire from spreading to additional homes and to ensure the safety of our residents,” the fire chief explained. He praised the cooperation of local landowners who cleared brush and created firebreaks to aid suppression efforts.

Rebuilding plans and next steps

County officials are working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assess eligibility for disaster assistance. Homeowners can apply for temporary housing assistance, low‑interest loans and grants to help rebuild. The county’s emergency management office has set up a dedicated hotline to answer questions about the application process.

Local churches have also opened their facilities as temporary shelters, providing a safe space for families to regroup. Pastor Mark Daniels of First Baptist Church in Lawton offered a prayer for the affected families, saying, “We trust in God’s provision and we will stand together as a community to rebuild what has been lost.”

Looking ahead

While the road to full recovery will be long, the resilience of Caddo County’s residents shines through. Volunteers continue to clear debris, and local businesses have donated building materials and meals for fire crews. The collective effort underscores a core belief shared by many in the area: that strong families, faith and a commitment to liberty can overcome even the toughest challenges.

As containment improves, officials urge residents to remain vigilant, follow safety guidelines and report any new fire activity immediately. The county’s emergency management team will provide regular updates through its website and social‑media channels.
