Houston celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with free festivals and concerts Sept. 19‑Oct. 5

Hispanic Heritage Month runs Sept. 19‑Oct. 5, and Houston’s neighborhoods are buzzing with free, family‑oriented celebrations that showcase the rich traditions of the Hispanic community. Below is a guide to the most notable events, all taking place within the Greater Houston area.

River Oaks District’s Hispanic Heritage Fiesta

Located at The Park in the River Oaks District, between Bari Ristorante and Dolce & Gabbana, the Fiesta offers an afternoon of cultural performances, artistry, and kid‑friendly activities. Rice University’s official mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Luna Llena, will perform alongside Colombian and Mexican folkloric dancers. Attendees can also sample a curated selection of Hispanic‑inspired treats. The event runs on Sept. 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

Tejano Queen Forever and El Turko Sonidero at Plaza at Avenida Houston

The Plaza at Avenida Houston will host an evening music festival featuring Tejano, cumbia, and other Latin sounds. The lineup includes the Selena tribute band Tejano Queen Forever, performing classics such as “Como La Flor” and “Amor Prohibido.” Houston‑based DJ Edgar Elturko Chega, known as El Turko Sonidero, will spin cumbia favorites throughout the night. This event is open to the public and free of charge.

México en el Corazón at Discovery Green

Discovery Green’s Anheuser‑Busch Stage welcomes the international touring company México en el Corazón for an outdoor showcase of traditional Mexican dance, ballet folklórico, regional costumes, and indigenous traditions. More than 70 performers will appear, and visitors can enjoy a variety of Latin foods from park vendors. Seating in front of the stage is limited; RSVPing does not guarantee wristband access, so guests are encouraged to arrive early.

Movie Night on the Lawn: “Selena”

Film lovers can watch a screening of the biopic “Selena” atop POST Houston’s rooftop park, Skylawn. The family‑friendly event offers food and beverage concessions from the venue’s on‑site marketplace. An RSVP is required, but admission is free.

Alejandro Meola at the Alief‑David M. Henington Regional Library

Argentine‑American musician Alejandro Meola will debut his new single “Viejo Teléfono” on Oct. 5 in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. The concert will feature a bilingual fusion of Latin, rock, blues, folk, and world sounds. Admission is free, though capacity is limited and registration is required.

All events are subject to change, and the list is not exhaustive. Residents are encouraged to check individual venue websites for the latest details and any required RSVPs.
