Charleston Lights Up the Sky for Carolina Day: Music, Parades, and a Dazzling Drone Show

Charleston rang in Carolina Day weekend in grand style, with a full slate of patriotic events honoring the 250th anniversary of the 1776 Battle of Sullivan’s Island — one of the American Revolution’s pivotal early victories.

The centerpiece of the celebration was a spectacular drone show over the harbor at the U.S. Customs House, organized as part of the SC250 commemoration. The evening brought together music, dance, and a sky full of illuminated drones, drawing crowds to the historic waterfront for a display that blended the city’s deep Revolutionary War heritage with modern spectacle.

The festivities stretched across the weekend and included a church service, a parade, and public programs that invited Charlestonians of all ages to reflect on the region’s outsized role in the founding of the nation. Attendees turned out in patriotic attire and accessories, adding to the festive atmosphere throughout the city.

Organizers also highlighted that appearances from the United Kingdom were lined up as part of Charleston’s 250th celebration — a fitting nod to the transatlantic history at the heart of Carolina Day. The multi-day program offered something for everyone, from solemn tributes at historic sites to lively community gatherings in the streets.

Carolina Day, observed each June 28, marks the date in 1776 when colonial forces successfully defended Fort Sullivan against a British naval assault — a battle that helped turn the tide of the Revolution in the South. This year’s SC250 festivities gave the anniversary fresh energy, reminding residents and visitors alike that South Carolina’s story is woven into the very fabric of American independence.
