Centre Stage’s production of ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ is set to open on Aug. 6, bringing a powerful exploration of truth, grief, and human connection to the stage. The musical, which premiered on Broadway nearly a decade ago, continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.
A Story of Loneliness and Belonging
The story follows Evan Hansen, a socially isolated high school student who struggles to connect with those around him. After the death of a classmate, Evan’s attempt to comfort the grieving family grows into a deception that changes the lives of everyone involved.
Director Erin Gill believes that the musical’s enduring themes are what make it especially timely. ‘I think art should be asking hard questions,’ Gill said. ‘And I think this musical does that.’ The production features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson and a rock-inflected score by Grammy, Tony, and Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
Centre Stage’s production will run from Aug. 6-23, with tickets available for $33-$38. The musical contains mature themes and language, including discussions of suicide, mental health struggles, and some strong language, and is recommended for a PG-13 audience.
