Former members of Springfield’s Scottish drum and bugle corps, including the Glendale High School Scotties, Hillcrest’s Highlanders, and Kickapoo’s Bonnies, reunited for a rehearsal on July 27 at Parkview High School. The group will perform alongside current corps, the Lassies and Kilties, on July 31.
Reviving a Tradition
The event is a first-of-its-kind addition to an annual tradition where school districts’ drum corps perform for each other before the school year begins. The performances will feature alumni groups from each corps, as well as memorabilia displays.
Joni Stant, a former member and current sponsor of the Lassies, said the event is a celebration of a tradition that has largely remained unchanged over the years. ‘This is a dream come true,’ Stant said. ‘It’s so important to not lose the history and heritage of these corps.’
The Kilties are celebrating their 101st year of continuous operation, while the Lassies are marking their 70th anniversary. Other corps across the district have disbanded, with some citing a decline in interest due to increased opportunities for girls in sports and other activities.
