Central Florida attorney ships 5,000 pounds of medical aid to Colombia after earthquake

When a powerful 7.4‑magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, killing nearly 300 people and leaving hospitals without essential medication and surgical equipment, a rapid response emerged from Central Florida. Local attorney Dan Newlin, who had been in Cali for the country’s presidential inauguration, coordinated a humanitarian airlift that sent two planes carrying more than 5,000 pounds of medical supplies to Bogotá.

From a presidential inauguration to a disaster response

Newlin was in Cali, Colombia, twelve hours before the quake when the nation’s new president and first lady were sworn in. After the tremor, the first lady reached out to Newlin, asking what could be done to help the injured and the overwhelmed hospitals. Newlin replied, “Just give us a list, and I’ll make it happen.” The first lady provided a detailed inventory of needed items, which Newlin then relayed to AdventHealth.

Logistics and delivery

AdventHealth supplied a truckload of supplies that were loaded onto the two aircraft owned by Newlin’s team. The flight departed Central Florida and landed in Bogotá, where the cargo was transferred to local distribution channels. Newlin said the effort covered every item on the first lady’s list, ensuring that hospitals received medication, bandages, IV fluids, and essential surgical tools that had been in short supply.

Impact on Colombian hospitals

Colombian medical facilities have been described as “starving for medication” and unable to perform surgeries due to a lack of proper equipment. The arrival of the Florida‑sourced supplies provided immediate relief, allowing doctors to treat trauma patients and perform urgent procedures that were previously delayed.

Future assistance

During the debrief, Colombia’s first lady asked Newlin’s team whether they could deliver additional aid if needed. Newlin confirmed the willingness to assist further, saying, “Of course we said yes.” The partnership illustrates how private citizens and faith‑motivated volunteers can mobilize quickly to support international disaster relief while reinforcing the values of compassion and service.

Community response at home

Back in Central Florida, the effort has sparked interest among local churches, civic groups, and businesses eager to contribute to the ongoing relief mission. Organizers are collecting donations of medical supplies, clothing, and funds to sustain future shipments. The story underscores the power of grassroots initiatives to make a tangible difference beyond national borders.

As the recovery in Colombia continues, the collaboration between a Central Florida attorney, a major health system, and the Colombian first lady serves as a reminder that faith‑guided service and individual liberty to help others remain vital components of a strong, compassionate community.
