Two Casper-born artists, Tom Loepp and Oliver Soulek, deployed their skills for a live audience at Citiwerks Cafe and Coworking in downtown Casper during the First Thursday Art Walk on the evening of Aug. 6. Loepp, a painter, and Soulek, a pianist, entertained the crowd with their unique talents.
Painting from Life
Loepp spoke to Oil City News about the challenges of painting live subjects, saying, “You grab something really immediately, like a concept, a pose or an energy.” He emphasized the importance of painting from life, stating, “The most important thing is painting from life… What I’m chasing is light and form. The beauty, the mood, the atmosphere, the energy: all those key words. The light effect is the key.”
Loepp used oil as his medium, allowing him to capture broad gestures and structures quickly, with details to be layered in later.
Soulek, who will be attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, performed a setlist that included Sonatas 1 and 2 by Bernhard Heiden and a Chopin waltz in B minor. He shared that what he’ll miss most about Casper is cross-country skiing on the mountain while listening to a Michael Giaccino film score.
