California Tech Executive Arrested for Alleged Illegal Tech Exports to Iran

In a significant enforcement of U.S. sanctions, federal agents arrested Jamshid Ghomi, a tech executive residing in Newport Beach, California, for allegedly exporting American technology to Iran. Ghomi, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen, is accused of violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act by funneling sensitive computer equipment to Iran’s military and nuclear networks.

Operation Details

Authorities allege that Ghomi orchestrated a complex scheme over more than a decade, using front companies and deceptive practices to supply Iran with U.S.-origin networking technology. Prosecutors claim that Ghomi’s operation involved a Tehran-based firm, Faraz Pardaz Rayaneh, and a front company in the United Arab Emirates to mask the true destination of the shipments. The operation reportedly involved over 250 tons of controlled technology.

Federal prosecutor Bill Essayli emphasized the seriousness of the charges, stating that Ghomi knowingly armed Iran with critical hardware, violating American sanctions. The arrest is part of a broader effort to crack down on sanctions evasion linked to Iran, a nation considered a state sponsor of terrorism by the U.S.

Financial and Legal Implications

Beyond sanctions violations, Ghomi faces potential charges of money laundering and tax evasion. Prosecutors allege that he generated over $10 million annually through his business while reporting minimal income to the IRS. His assets, including a lavish 14,000-square-foot mansion overlooking the Pacific, are now targets for seizure.

The early-morning raid on Ghomi’s estate involved dozens of armed agents and resulted in the detention of his family members for questioning. The operation underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to enforcing laws prohibiting business with nations under sanctions.
