California Senator Heckled at Trans March

California state Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco, was forced to leave San Francisco’s Trans March at Dolores Park on Friday after demonstrators confronted him over his stance on Israel and Gaza.

Confrontation at the Trans March

A video showed several people surrounding Wiener as he walked through the park, with multiple hecklers shouting profanity-laced messages. One person, Dimitry Yakoushkin, criticized Wiener’s position on the war in Gaza, saying, ‘I think your policy on the genocide is terrible!’ and ‘You do not belong here!’

Wiener said he had attended the Trans March every year since the first march in 2004 and was walking through Dolores Park to attend a trans-led Pride Shabbat service when the confrontation unfolded. He stated that the group invoked Israel while confronting him, making statements about his ‘Israeli handlers,’ among many other inaccurate, extreme, and vile statements.

Rep. Kevin Mullin, D-Calif., said the confrontation went beyond the Bay Area’s tradition of political protest, stating, ‘There is simply no place for hate speech, harassment, and violence – in our politics or elsewhere.’ California Senate President Pro Tempore Monique Limón and the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus also condemned the confrontation.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie described the language directed at Wiener as antisemitic, saying, ‘As mayor, I can never accept hate directed at a member of our community.’ Wiener finished first in California’s top-two primary for the San Francisco-based 11th Congressional District and will face San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan in the November general election.
