Where the River Runs Wild: Discovering the Magic of Palisades State Park

About twenty miles east of Sioux Falls, just past the small town of Garretson, the flat prairie suddenly breaks open and reveals something that feels almost impossibly dramatic for South Dakota: towering quartzite cliffs, some of them more than fifty feet high, rising straight up from the banks of Split Rock Creek. This is Palisades State Park, and if you haven’t made the drive out here yet, you are missing one of the genuinely great natural surprises in the entire upper Midwest.

The park gets its name from those striking pink and red quartzite formations that line the creek corridor, and geologists will tell you the rock is among the oldest exposed stone on the continent — somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.6 billion years old. Standing at the edge of one of those ledges, looking down at the clear, cold water below, that number stops feeling abstract and starts feeling humbling. The landscape here was carved long before anything we know as history, and you can feel that kind of deep time in a way that’s hard to put into words.

The hiking trails are modest in length but rich in scenery. The main loop winds along the creek and through the rock formations, offering constant views and plenty of spots to stop, sit, and just take it in. The trail surface varies — some stretches are smooth and easy, others require a bit of scrambling over rocks — so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. In the warmer months, wildflowers push up through the cracks in the quartzite, and the cottonwood trees along the creek provide generous shade. In autumn, the whole corridor transforms into a corridor of gold and amber that photographers make special trips to capture.

Rock climbing is one of the park’s biggest draws, and for good reason. The quartzite formations offer dozens of established routes ranging from beginner-friendly faces to technical overhangs that will challenge experienced climbers. The rock is solid and grippy, and the relatively short approach from the parking area means you spend more time on the wall and less time hiking in. Families often set up at the lower bouldering areas while more serious climbers tackle the taller routes overhead.

If you want to extend your visit, the park has a campground with both electric and primitive sites, and weekends in summer fill up fast. Reservations through the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks website are strongly recommended from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The campfire rings, the sound of the creek, and a sky full of stars make for a simple but genuinely restorative overnight.

Garretson itself is worth a quick stop before or after your visit. The town is small but friendly, and Split Rock Park right in town offers another access point to the creek with its own set of dramatic rock formations and a footbridge that makes for a great photo.

The drive from downtown Sioux Falls takes less than thirty minutes, and the contrast between the city and this wild, ancient landscape is part of what makes the trip feel like such a reward. Palisades State Park is the kind of place that locals sometimes keep quietly to themselves, but it deserves to be known. Go once, and you’ll be back every season.
