California House Candidate Embraces Activist Role

Randy Villegas, a congressional candidate in California’s 22nd District, has made diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) a central part of his academic and professional work. As a political science professor at College of the Sequoias and a Visalia school board trustee, Villegas has co-authored papers and led initiatives that promote DEI and social justice.

Academic Work

Villegas co-authored a 2022 paper titled ‘A Commitment to Teaching, Learning, and Student Advocacy: Community College Careers,’ which argues that DEI is essential to the mission of community college educators. The paper describes DEI as a ‘social justice-driven duty’ and emphasizes the importance of culturally responsive teaching.

Villegas has also been involved in grassroots activism, including organizing May Day demonstrations and working with community groups to advocate for various causes. His dissertation, ‘Voices from the Valley of Vulnerability,’ highlights his experiences as a community organizer and scholar activist.

Implications for the Election

Villegas is running against Republican Rep. David Valadao in a highly contested election. The Democratic Party has made the seat a top pickup target, and the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the district as a ‘toss-up.’ Villegas’ emphasis on DEI and social justice may resonate with some voters, but it has also drawn criticism from Republicans who view his approach as too radical.
