Cal State Fullerton student dies after fraternity gathering; police cite possible alcohol role

Fullerton, Calif. – An 18‑year‑old student at California State University, Fullerton, was pronounced dead early Saturday at St. Jude Medical Center after attending a fraternity gathering at an off‑campus residence. The Fullerton Police Department identified the student as Anthony Joseph Blas.

Police investigation

According to Fullerton police, Blas was found unresponsive after the event and was transported to the hospital, where lifesaving measures were unsuccessful. Detectives are treating the death as a possible result of alcohol consumption, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The department emphasized that hazing was not a factor and that there is no evidence of foul play at the scene, which is located near Milton Avenue and Associated Road.

University response

Cal State Fullerton released a statement expressing deep sorrow for the loss. “The university is aware of the death of a student that occurred over the weekend at an off‑campus residence. Our hearts are with the student’s family and the campus community during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read. The school is offering counseling services through its Counseling and Psychological Services department and is reaching out to students who may be affected.

Community call to action

Fullerton police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Carrillo at (714) 738‑5361 or via email at [email protected]. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1‑855‑847‑6227.

Context for families

The tragedy underscores the importance of responsible decision‑making among young adults, especially in social settings where alcohol is present. Parents and guardians are encouraged to maintain open dialogue with their children about the risks associated with excessive drinking and to model the values of personal responsibility and respect for life.

Local faith leaders have offered prayers for the family and called on the community to support one another during this painful time. The incident serves as a sobering reminder that safeguarding the well‑being of our youth is a shared responsibility that aligns with the core values of family, faith, and liberty.
