Bubba Wallace Aims for 2nd Brickyard 400 Win

INDIANAPOLIS — Bubba Wallace is back at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he made history last year by becoming the first Black driver to win a major race on Indy’s oval. This time, he’s looking to defend his title in the Brickyard 400.

Defending the Title

Wallace’s return to Indianapolis has been marked by a mix of nostalgia and focus on the task at hand. When he pulled through one of the speedway’s tunnels, he was greeted by a banner featuring his image alongside previous race winners. However, he’s not here to relive the past; he’s focused on delivering another historic moment.

Race weekend hasn’t started well for Wallace, with an incident during Friday’s practice session and a less-than-ideal qualifying performance. He’ll start 29th on the oval, a challenging position given the track’s history of favoring top qualifiers.

Aiming for Back-to-Back Wins

Despite the challenges, Wallace is determined to join an elite group of drivers who have achieved back-to-back victories at the Brickyard 400. Only three drivers have managed this feat since NASCAR first started racing at Indy in 1994: Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, and Kevin Harvick.

Wallace acknowledges that his first win has had a profound impact on his personal life, making him a better husband, father, and less stressed person. A second win would be almost unimaginable, and he’s grateful for the opportunity to compete at this level.

Honoring Kyle Busch

The race weekend is also marked by tributes to Kyle Busch, the two-time Cup champion who passed away in May. A banner featuring Busch’s image has been displayed downtown, and another banner near the start-finish line features his car number and signature. The track’s scoring pylon will have a special display for Busch during the race.
