Brazos County is working to improve maternal health outcomes through various local programs and partnerships. The 2026-2028 Brazos County Community Health Improvement Plan identifies maternal health as a priority issue and calls for collaboration with Texas A&M University and local health care partners to address gaps in care.
Addressing Delayed Prenatal Care
Delayed first-trimester prenatal care is a concern in Brazos County. Robin Page, associate professor at Texas A&M University’s College of Nursing, emphasized the importance of early prenatal care in improving outcomes for both mother and child. Early prenatal visits allow providers to conduct screenings, establish accurate pregnancy timelines, identify risk factors, and begin interventions before complications develop.
However, getting timely appointments can be difficult, even for women with health insurance, due to a provider shortage in Brazos County. The county is not considered a maternity care desert, but surrounding counties are, increasing pressure on providers in Bryan-College Station as patients travel into the community seeking care.
Local Programs and Partnerships
Several local programs focus on connecting expectant mothers with support services before and after birth. The Texas A&M Program of Excellence for Mothers, Children and Families operates a Nurse-Family Partnership valley-wide, serving low-income, first-time mothers with a registered nurse early in pregnancy and continuing support until the child’s second birthday.
Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach provides support for pregnant and parenting students, including housing assistance, material resources, and connections to community services. Director of Community Outreach Andrea Buck noted that school-based outreach is an effective way to connect young mothers with resources and practical support.
The Brazos County Health District reported that roughly 18% of its clientele comes from residents outside of the county. Local health care leaders agree that a combination of medical care, education, home-visiting services, and practical support creates a stronger safety net for families throughout Bryan-College Station and the surrounding Brazos Valley.
