Nearly 1 in 3 married Americans aren’t having sex, according to recent data from the General Social Survey. Dr. Anna Elton, a licensed marriage and family therapist and clinical sexologist, shared tips to help couples reignite intimacy in their relationships.
Reigniting Intimacy
Elton defined a ‘sexless marriage’ as being physically intimate 10 or fewer times per year. She suggested that couples focus on emotional connection and shared positive aspects of their relationship to improve intimacy.
Elton recommended exercises such as focusing on the positive aspects of the relationship for one week, making mental notes and sharing them with your partner. She also suggested choosing one night as a ‘tech-free’ night to reconnect with your partner.
Bringing Back Fun
Elton emphasized the importance of having fun in a relationship. She recommended an exercise called A-to-Z date nights, where couples choose an activity that starts with a different letter of the alphabet for each date.
Elton also noted that a lack of self-desire as people age can get in the way of accepting advances for intimacy from partners. She shared small steps that can help produce the love and bonding hormone oxytocin, boosting connection both personally and between partners.
