Bradford’s Oldest Oil Field Gave This Trail Its Best Views

The parking pull-off on Corydon Pike doesn’t announce itself. There’s no kiosk, no map board with a you-are-here arrow, no cheerful signage about Leave No Trace principles. There’s a gravel shoulder, a gap in the guardrail, and a path that disappears into the tree line like it has somewhere to be. That’s roughly where this walk begins.

The upper stretch of the Tuna Valley Trail running out from Bradford’s northern edge follows a ridgeline corridor that most locals drive past on the way to somewhere else. I’ve lived here long enough to have done the same thing for years before a guy I fish with mentioned it in passing, the way you’d mention a decent hardware store. He said it was worth an hour. He was right, though two hours is more honest.

The trail itself runs along the valley walls above Tuna Creek, and the terrain shifts more than you’d expect for McKean County. The first quarter mile is pretty flat, a wide dirt track through second-growth hardwoods where mountain bikes have clearly been at work on the softer corners. Then the path climbs and narrows, and the creek drops below you, and you start getting the views that justify the whole expedition. In fall those views are about as good as this part of Pennsylvania gets — ridge after ridge going amber and rust, the creek showing silver through the gaps, and absolutely no one trying to sell you anything.

This is oil country, or it was. The pump jacks are still out there if you look for them, rusting quietly in the understory along the lower portions of the valley. Bradford built its whole identity on oil money in the late 1800s, and the Tuna Valley was part of that story. Hiking through here you’ll occasionally cross a rusted pipe or a concrete pad going back to vegetation, little archaeological footnotes to an industry that remade this town. It’s more interesting than it sounds.

Spring and fall are the right seasons. Summer works if you go early, before the humidity gets established and the bugs clock in for their shift. Winter is technically possible but the upper sections get icy in ways that will teach you lessons about footwear. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt and root, with some loose shale on the steeper grades. Waterproof boots are not overthinking it.

Bring water. There are no facilities of any kind out here — no bathrooms, no benches, no trailhead concession stand selling overpriced trail mix. The remoteness is, depending on your perspective, either the problem or the whole point. I’m in the second camp. Bradford has parks with amenities if you need amenities. This trail gives you something rarer in a small city: actual quiet, sustained over enough distance to feel like it means something.

Cost is zero. The only investment is the drive out Corydon Pike, which takes about ten minutes from downtown and passes through some genuinely nice farmland on its way. Figure two hours round trip at a moderate pace, longer if you stop to watch the creek or poke around the old equipment. Wear layers in shoulder seasons. Tell someone where you went. That last part is just habit out here, not alarmism.

It’s a good trail. Not famous, not crowded, not going anywhere. Come on a weekday and you’ll probably have it to yourself.
