Jackson, WY – The National Museum of Wildlife Art will host a free community opening on Friday, Oct. 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the highly anticipated exhibition Cristina Mittermeier: A Greater Wisdom. The event welcomes families, friends and anyone interested in wildlife photography, Mexican culture and the traditions of Día de los Muertos.
About the exhibition
Mexican photographer, author and activist Cristina “Mitty” Mittermeier has spent three decades traveling the globe documenting the planet’s wild inhabitants and the cultures that share their habitats. Organized by the National Geographic Society and Gallerie d’Italia, Intesa Sanpaolo’s museums, the show makes its North American debut in Jackson Hole. Mittermeier’s images explore the connections between humanity and the broader web of life, encouraging viewers to contemplate a sense of “enoughness.”
One of the highlighted works is a portrait of La Catrina, the elegantly dressed skeleton that has become an iconic symbol of Día de los Muertos. Mittermeier photographed the figure in Oaxaca, where the holiday’s traditions honor death as a continuous thread linking past and present. To serve the Spanish‑speaking community, all wall text is presented in both Spanish and English.
What to expect
The first 300 guests will receive a complimentary churro and a cup of Mexican hot chocolate. Live music will be provided by Mariachi Juvenil Juarez throughout the evening. Museum educators will be on hand to discuss the photographs, and a gallery scavenger hunt will give families a chance to win a prize.
Other fall exhibitions
While you’re in town, consider visiting the museum’s other new fall shows. Birds in Art celebrates its 50th anniversary with 60 works from past years of the beloved annual show. Impact and Entanglement: Three Video Works by Christina Seely fills the Wapiti Gallery with immersive video installations and daguerreotype portraits created alongside scientists in the Arctic and tropics.
Sponsorship and support
The community opening is generously sponsored by the Friess Wildlife Art Charitable Lead Trust, the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board, and the Lea Charitable Trust. Executive Director Steve Seamons said, “We look forward to sharing this inspiring exhibition with our community. Mittermeier’s work sparks wonder, inspires critical thinking, and reminds us that we all belong to a collective whole.”
