Leeann Curry, a career technical education teacher at Owyhee High School in Idaho, emphasizes practices to expose students to the challenges and rewards of running a business. Curry draws from her own real-world business experience, including owning a food service brokerage and working as a bookkeeper.
Hands-On Learning
Curry’s students participate in real-world activities, such as simulating a coffee shop or creating a resort for a target market. She also works part-time at a coffee shop in downtown Boise, which she hopes to incorporate into future Business Management classes.
Curry’s approach to teaching has been successful, with former students like Nora Lindke crediting her with helping them develop business plans and secure internships. Curry’s goal is to prepare her students for the realities of entrepreneurship, including the possibility of failure.
“I want to see my students apply what they learned and put it into practice,” Curry said. “I want them to know how to find the answers.”
