There are restaurants that feed you, and then there are restaurants that transport you. Albany’s 677 Prime, tucked into the ground floor of a beautifully restored 19th-century building on Broadway in the heart of downtown, falls firmly into the second category. The moment you step through its doors, the noise of the city fades and something altogether more civilized takes over.
I first walked into 677 Prime on a blustery November evening, honestly expecting just a good steak. What I found instead was one of the most genuinely impressive dining experiences in the entire Capital Region. The interior alone is worth the visit — exposed brick walls, warm amber lighting, leather banquettes that seem designed specifically for long, unhurried conversations, and a bar stocked with a whiskey selection that would make a Kentucky distiller weep with joy.
The menu is a love letter to serious American steakhouse cooking, but with a culinary sophistication that sets it clearly apart from the typical chain chophouse. The centerpiece, naturally, is the beef — USDA prime cuts, dry-aged and prepared with the kind of confidence that only comes from years of practice. The bone-in ribeye is a marvel: deeply marbled, with a crust that gives way to the most tender, richly flavored interior you can imagine. Order it with the truffle butter and you will not be thinking about anything else for the next twenty minutes.
But 677 Prime is far more than a one-trick pony. The seafood selections are exceptional — a raw bar with impeccably fresh oysters, a buttery lobster bisque that disappears from the bowl far too quickly, and a pan-seared halibut that proves the kitchen’s range extends well beyond beef. The sides, often an afterthought in steakhouses, are given real attention here. The creamed spinach is rich and properly seasoned, and the crispy duck-fat potatoes are the kind of thing you’ll find yourself describing to friends days later.
The wine program is equally thoughtful. The list runs deep in California Cabernets and Bordeaux varietals, with helpful staff who can guide you without ever making you feel talked down to. The sommelier clearly knows the menu intimately, and the pairings they suggest are always spot on.
677 Prime sits just steps from the Times Union Center and the Hudson River waterfront, making it a natural anchor for a full evening out in downtown Albany. Come for a pre-show dinner, a celebratory meal, or simply because you believe — as I do — that a great city deserves a great steakhouse. Albany has exactly that, and it would be a genuine shame to visit without experiencing it.
Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly on weekends. Dress with a little intention — not a suit required, but this is a place that rewards the effort. When you sit down, take a breath, look around at the warm glow of the room, and allow yourself to settle in. The evening is going to be a good one.
