Bloomington family rescues Meemers, the short‑spine cat who’s gone viral

Bloomington, Ill. – When Katie Dahlen and her husband first saw a tiny, box‑wrapped kitten at the shelter where Dahlen worked, they knew the animal belonged in their home. The kitten, later named Meemers, suffers from short spine syndrome – a condition that shortens the vertebral column and leaves her with a virtually nonexistent neck.

From shelter box to internet sensation

Meemers, now two and a half years old, measures just 7½ inches from shoulder to tail base and has a slight tail deformity. After a course of antibiotics and daily grooming, she recovered enough to join the Dahlen family in July 2025. In August 2024, Dahlen posted a short video of Meemers sitting calmly and giving a “Blue Steel” pose. Within 24 hours, the clip racked up more than 45 million views, drawing comparisons to Jimothy the raccoon, another animal with the same condition.

Living with short spine syndrome

Because her organs are compressed in a compact body, Meemers cannot climb or jump and overheats easily, much like a pug. Dahlen says she keeps outdoor time to the cooler evenings and always holds the cat in a specific way to protect her delicate spine. The feline also cannot groom her own back, so Dahlen brushes her multiple times a day and gives occasional baths to redistribute coat oils.

“She loves people and will go anywhere on a leash,” Dahlen noted. “When you pet her, she talks back with little meows that sound like SpongeBob’s Gary.” The cat’s unique name evolved from her original shelter name Mila, through nicknames “Mimi” and “Mealy Bug,” before settling on Meemers.

Raising awareness for special‑needs pets

Beyond the viral fame, Dahlen hopes Meemers’ story encourages other families to consider adopting animals with special needs. “Give special‑needs cats a chance,” she said. “They require a bit of adaptation, but they are worth every effort.”

Meemers’ popularity has sparked fan requests for collaborations with Jimothy the raccoon and Tilly, a well‑known dog also living with short spine syndrome. The community response underscores a growing appreciation for rescue animals and the extra care they may need.

What owners can learn

For pet owners facing similar challenges, Dahlen recommends regular veterinary check‑ups, a cool environment, and hands‑on grooming. She also stresses the importance of patience and love, noting that Meemers’ affectionate nature shines through despite her physical limitations.

As Meemers continues to charm viewers worldwide, her story serves as a reminder that every animal, regardless of condition, can bring joy to a home willing to adapt.
