DC Metro holds open house to discuss upgrades for Stadium‑Armory station

Washington, D.C. – Metro hosted an open‑house meeting on Tuesday night for neighbors of the future Commanders stadium site. Residents gathered across the street from the Stadium/Armory Metro station to hear directly from Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke and city officials about transportation plans tied to the $3.8 billion development.

Station capacity concerns

The stadium, slated to open in 2030 with 65,000 seats, could generate as many as 38,000 riders per event via public transit. The existing Stadium‑Armory station can currently process roughly 14,000 customers per hour, prompting Metro to propose a major expansion. Planned improvements include a larger entrance, additional stairs, escalators and elevators to move crowds more efficiently.

Gold Line rapid bus proposal

Clarke highlighted a proposed Gold Line rapid bus service that would run from Union Station to the stadium area. He said the bus rapid transit project offers “the true chance to do what the streetcar never did: really revitalize the H Street corridor” and would benefit local businesses and the Benning Road community.

Funding and community input

The Commanders organization has pledged $2.7 billion toward the project, while the District will contribute $1.1 billion for infrastructure upgrades. Community members voiced concerns and questions. Kevita Mack, a resident of 19th Street NE, asked about the future of the bus bay, noting that recent bus system changes have reduced service to the area. Councilmember Wendell Felder (Ward 7) emphasized the need to listen to affected neighborhoods such as Rosedale, Kingman Park and River Terrace. Councilmember Charles Allen (Ward 6) urged residents to stay engaged and report any issues they observe.

Next steps

Metro officials said the project’s schedule is aggressive but achievable. “Every day matters, but Metro is committed,” Clarke told reporters. The agency plans to continue holding community meetings as design work progresses, ensuring that local voices remain part of the planning process.
