Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa, is inviting the public to predict the birth dates of two pregnant giraffes, Skye and Zola, who are expected to give birth later this summer.
Guess the Birth Dates
The zoo is letting participants guess each calf’s birthday, with the closest guess winning a family membership. If someone correctly picks both dates and matches each mom, they will win a lifetime pass.
Zookeepers say predicting the exact dates is challenging. ‘Pinning exactly when they’re going to have their baby can be challenging. You know, we look for visual signs and cues that maybe it’s getting close. And, when we start seeing those, we’ll bring them inside, and we have a sand stall. So, that’s our birthing stall, and, a lot safer for the baby to fall. Because they do drop about six feet when they’re born. So that’s one of the things we do to get them ready is just make sure they’re in a safe space,’ said large mammal supervisor Kayla Freeman.
Entries for the contest are open through July 1.
