Australia’s spy chief, Mike Burgess, warned that the country’s security environment is degrading due to multi-faceted threats from autocratic regimes, hackers, and antisemitic extremists.
Threats to National Security
According to Burgess, the threats present a systemic challenge to national security, with the terrorism threat level remaining at ‘probable’. However, Burgess noted that this designation does not accurately capture the ‘concurrent, cascading and compounding threats’ faced by the country.
ASIO has foiled 31 major terror plots since 2014 and resolved more than a dozen major terror-related cases, including the Bondi Beach mass shooting in December. The attack, which killed 15 people, was allegedly inspired by the Islamic State militant group.
Radicalization and Foreign Spies
Burgess also warned about the radicalizing effects of encrypted chat platforms and social media, which can amplify grievance narratives and erode trust in institutions. Additionally, foreign spies are targeting classified information on Australia’s AUKUS nuclear submarine partnership with the United States and Britain.
Burgess blamed Iran for arson attacks on Jewish businesses in Australia, saying that one of the attacks was likely coordinated by an Australian citizen living in Iran, working as an agent within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
