There’s a chalkboard menu above the bar at The Alibi, which is either a coincidence or a wink, depending on how long you’ve been drinking in Sheridan. The place sits on North Main, occupying a spot that’s seen a few different concepts come and go, and it carries that lived-in bar energy that Wyoming towns do better than most — dim enough to feel comfortable, loud enough that you’re not performing a conversation.
The Alibi describes itself as a bar and grill, which is accurate but undersells the kitchen. The menu runs burgers, sandwiches, and pub standards, but a few things warrant specific mention. The green chile cheeseburger is the reason regulars come back — a half-pound patty with roasted Hatch-style chiles and American cheese, nothing fussy, cooked correctly, the kind of burger that doesn’t need a marketing campaign. Fries are shoestring, crispy, served in a metal basket. The fried pickles hold up: brined long enough to stay tangy through the batter. Nachos are massive and skippable.
Drinks are priced like a local bar should be. Draft selection rotates but leans Wyoming-forward — you’ll usually find Black Tooth or Luminous on tap alongside a couple of domestic standbys. The well whiskey situation is fine; the rail isn’t trying to embarrass you. Cocktail list is short and unfussy, which is a compliment.
The room itself is worth describing because Sheridan has some genuinely nice bars and The Alibi isn’t one of them, in the best sense. It’s not aiming at anyone’s design sensibility. Dark wood, neon beer signs, a few TVs tuned to whatever sport is on, a pool table that sees real use. During the week, the crowd skews toward people who work in town — contractors, county employees, nurses from the hospital two blocks east. On Friday and Saturday nights it fills up faster and runs louder. Weekend evenings after nine, it can be hard to get a spot at the bar without waiting.
Service is fast when the bartenders aren’t slammed and slower when they are, which is honest. The staff doesn’t pretend to be something the place isn’t, and that tone carries through the whole experience. You order, you eat, you have another drink if you want one, you leave. Nobody upsells you on a dessert.
Pricing is reasonable for a sit-down meal: burgers run around eleven to fourteen dollars, most appetizers under ten. A beer and a burger will cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty dollars before tip, which by 2024 Wyoming standards is not remarkable, but it’s fair.
What The Alibi actually does well is function — it’s a working bar in a mid-size western city that serves decent food and doesn’t make you feel like you wandered into the wrong demographic. Sheridan has more ambitious options in every direction, and there are nights when that’s exactly what you want. But there are other nights when you just want to watch the game, eat a green chile burger, and not think about it. This is the place for that.
It opens at eleven most days and stays open late on weekends. Cash is accepted but cards are easier. Street parking on Main is free after six.
