Early Friday morning, around 3:30 a.m., a young brown bear entered the Sunset Heights subdivision near Salmon, Idaho, and attacked a couple standing on their porch. The sudden encounter left both individuals injured; one was airlifted by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls for treatment.
Response by Idaho Fish and Game and Lemhi County Sheriff
Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) was alerted by the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office and deployed its Wildlife Human Attack Response Team to secure the scene. The department confirmed that the victims received prompt medical attention and that the bear was subsequently located.
Using a professional houndsman, IDFG and sheriff’s deputies tracked the bear, its sibling, and an adult female believed to be their mother. All three bears were humanely euthanized to protect the community.
Safety guidance for residents
The Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office reminded residents of steps to deter bears from approaching homes. Recommendations include removing outdoor food odors, securing trash and garbage, cleaning grills, removing bird feeders and pet food, managing fruit trees, sealing potential entry points, keeping doors and windows closed, and using deterrent mats around property perimeters.
These measures aim to reduce attractants that draw bears into residential areas, helping to prevent future incidents.
Previous local bear encounters
In July, a jogger and his dog were attacked by a bear in a state park in Fremont County, southeast of Lemhi County. The jogger was able to leave the area on his own, and the dog was unharmed. That bear was not recovered.
Local wildlife officials continue to monitor bear activity in the region and encourage residents to report sightings promptly.
Community impact
The attack has heightened awareness among homeowners in the Salmon area about coexistence with wildlife. While Idaho’s bear population is an important part of the state’s natural heritage, officials stress that responsible practices can protect both people and animals.
Authorities urge anyone who encounters a bear to remain calm, avoid sudden movements, and contact law enforcement or IDFG for assistance.
