The legendary Batpod motorcycle, famously seen in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), is set to go under the hammer at a Propstore auction in London. The auction house estimates the bike could fetch as much as £900,000 (about $1.2 million).
Design and engineering details
According to Stephen Lane, CEO and founder of Propstore, the Batpod—also nicknamed “The Beast”—was designed by Nolan in collaboration with production designer Nathan Crowley. Visual‑effects veteran Chris Korvold, an Academy Award winner, helped bring the concept to life on set.
Lane highlighted the engineering challenges, noting that the bike runs on a 750 cc Honda engine and rides on massive 31‑inch tires. “It’s actually quite a feat of engineering … to have that thing practically working on set,” he told CNN. He added that both the actors and stunt performers found it “really, really tricky” to sit on and operate.
On‑set incidents
Lane recounted several incidents where the Batpod slipped out of control during filming. In one video, the bike careened into a camera, knocking it over. “It basically sort of careers out of control and knocks the camera over,” he said, emphasizing the difficulty of handling the vehicle.
Rarity and auction context
Only six Batpods were ever built, and this is the sole example officially released by Warner Bros. Studios. Lane explained that such unique movie props are highly desirable because of their distinctive design and visual impact. “It’s got to be one of the most impressive looking and … memorable movie vehicles of all time,” he said.
Online bidding for the Batpod opened on Thursday and will close on December 4 with a live auction in London. The sale is part of a larger memorabilia event featuring more than 100 lots, including two complete Batsuits—one worn by Christian Bale in 2005’s Batman Begins and another worn by Val Kilmer in Batman Forever (1995).
Other highlights include the fedora and shirt worn by stuntman Vic Armstrong in the Indiana Jones films, the sword used by Kit Harington’s Jon Snow in the television series Game of Thrones, and Freddy Krueger’s glove, which met its reserve price of £25,000 ($34,000) shortly after the auction began.
Preview exhibition
More than 100 lots will be displayed at a preview exhibition at the Cumberland Hotel in London from November 19 to November 22, giving collectors and fans a chance to view the items before the auction.
The Batpod auction underscores the enduring popularity of Nolan’s Batman franchise and the market for high‑profile film props. Whether the bike reaches the top of its estimate will be watched closely by collectors worldwide.
