Barnes & Noble to Acquire Joseph‑Beth Bookstores, Preserve Local Identity

In a move that blends national scale with local tradition, Barnes & Noble announced it will acquire Joseph‑Beth Booksellers, the beloved independent chain that has served readers in Lexington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio for four decades. The agreement, detailed in a press release, confirms that both storefronts and their Bronte Bistros will remain open under the Joseph‑Beth name.

Preserving a Community Hub

Robert Langley, owner and chairman of Joseph‑Beth Booksellers, emphasized the decision’s focus on continuity. “For 40 years, Joseph‑Beth has been more than a bookstore. It has been a gathering place for readers, families, local authors, teachers and neighbors. In honoring its importance to the communities its two stores serve and to support its future longevity, this decision was necessary,” Langley said.

The two locations—situated at the Mall at Lexington Green and the Rookwood Pavilion—will retain their current staff, event schedules, and community‑focused programming. Barnes & Noble promises to supplement those efforts with its broader supply chain, technology platforms, and marketing reach, aiming to enhance the customer experience without eroding the stores’ distinctive character.

Corporate Support, Local Flavor

James Daunt, CEO of Barnes & Noble, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “Joseph‑Beth Booksellers has a storied history and wonderful bookstores, and we are very pleased to ensure their continuity. We especially look forward to welcoming the booksellers of these two distinctive bookstores into the company,” Daunt said.

According to the release, the acquisition will bring “the added benefit of Barnes & Noble’s resources and modernized operations” to the independent brand. This includes access to a larger inventory, enhanced digital ordering tools, and potential upgrades to in‑store technology, all while preserving the local events that have made Joseph‑Beth a cultural fixture.

What This Means for Local Readers

Community members can expect the same welcoming atmosphere that has defined Joseph‑Beth for years. Book clubs, author signings, school outreach programs, and the Bronte Bistro’s café service will continue uninterrupted. The partnership also opens the door for new author tours and larger‑scale literary festivals, leveraging Barnes & Noble’s national connections.

Local business leaders have welcomed the news, noting that the preservation of an independent‑brand bookstore helps maintain the cultural fabric of both Lexington and Cincinnati. The acquisition is seen as a model for how larger retailers can support, rather than replace, cherished community institutions.

Looking Ahead

The transaction is expected to close later this year, pending standard regulatory approvals. Both stores will operate under the Joseph‑Beth banner, with Barnes & Noble providing back‑office support and strategic guidance. Readers in the region can look forward to a seamless blend of local charm and the broader capabilities of a national bookseller.

For more information about upcoming events or changes to store hours, customers are encouraged to visit the Joseph‑Beth websites or stop by the Lexington and Cincinnati locations.
