Bank of England’s Greene Predicts Shift from Stablecoins to Tokenised Deposits

The financial landscape may be on the brink of change as Bank of England policymaker Megan Greene predicts a shift from the popular stablecoins to tokenised deposits. Speaking at a conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia, Greene expressed her belief that digital versions of traditional bank deposits could soon overshadow stablecoins.

Financial Innovation and Regulation

Stablecoins, known for maintaining a stable value, have seen significant growth in recent years. However, Greene argues that tokenised deposits will likely take precedence as commercial banks recognize the potential loss of traditional deposits. She noted, “I think tokenised deposits are probably going to take over from stablecoins, and five years from now, I suspect we might wonder why we were talking about stablecoins.”

In contrast, U.S. Federal Reserve policymaker Christopher Waller defended stablecoins, describing them as a financial innovation that could reduce costs. Waller stated, “I’ve always just looked at stablecoins as a payment instrument; there’s nothing evil about it, nothing dangerous about it. They are just bringing competition into the payments world.”

Challenges and Future Prospects

Greene highlighted several challenges facing stablecoins, including regulatory questions and their use in illicit activities. She also pointed out that stablecoins could undermine the effectiveness of monetary policy by drawing deposits away from commercial banks. Waller acknowledged the threat stablecoins pose to banks, noting their lobbying efforts to curb stablecoin growth.

Despite these challenges, Greene remains optimistic about the future of digital banking. She likened the competition between central bank digital currencies, stablecoins, and tokenised deposits to a race between a tortoise, a hare, and a rhino, respectively. Greene concluded, “We’ll probably end up with all three, but if I had to put money in one, it would be the rhino, tokenised deposits, which I think will probably take off.”
