Austin residents gathered to remember Malin, a troll art installation in Pease Park that was destroyed by fire on May 21. The installation, crafted by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, was a beloved fixture in the park and a symbol of the connection between humans, animals, and the environment.
Community Comes Together
The memorial event featured speeches, music, poetry, and an art activation where attendees could use Malin’s ashes to paint. Pease Park Conservancy distributed the troll’s ashes, labeled ‘Malin’s Magic Mix,’ and invited attendees to bring a memento, photo, or drawing for Malin.
Austin City Council member Marc Duchen presented a proclamation from the city, declaring June 24, 2026, as Malin’s Fountain Day. The event was a testament to the impact that Malin had on the community, with many attendees expressing their gratitude for the art piece and the sense of connection it brought to the park.
Malin was revealed in March 2024 and built with the help of over a hundred volunteers. The installation was constructed using recycled wood from Denmark and reclaimed wood from the J.J. Pickle Research Campus at The University of Texas at Austin.
