Arlington County Police Department made public a body‑camera video of a May 8 standoff that ended in a fatal officer‑involved shooting, a development local residents say underscores the challenges of responding to armed threats in public spaces.
According to Police1.com, the incident began after a 911 caller reported a man approaching a woman outside a convenience store and threatening to hit her. Officers arrived to find the suspect wearing heavy, reflective clothing standing outside the store. The first officer ordered the man to raise his hands, but the suspect ignored the command and later walked toward the street as a second officer arrived.
“I got less lethal,” the first officer told a colleague, adding, “It ain’t gonna work, but I got it.” Officers again ordered the suspect to put his hands up, warning that he would be tased if he did not comply. The suspect responded, “Man, f*** you,” before retreating back into the store.
Additional officers used a public‑address system to order the man to exit, but he did not comply. A store employee trapped in a bathroom escaped, allowing police to enter through a rear door. The suspect then moved into a storage area and erected a barricade behind a second door.
Negotiators attempted to communicate for nearly two hours, but the suspect’s verbal responses were largely unintelligible. Police deployed a drone to view the interior, revealing the barricade. Through a gap between a wall and a soda machine, officers released less‑lethal chemical irritant projectiles. More than two and a half hours after the initial response, officers breached the barricaded door and again deployed irritant projectiles.
When the door opened, the suspect advanced toward officers while holding a knife. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon and fired TASERs and less‑lethal sponge rounds, which proved ineffective. The suspect continued toward a K‑9 unit and its handler, prompting officers to fire live rounds. The suspect was struck, rendered unconscious, and later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The department said EMS personnel provided aid before transport. The shooting remains under investigation, with the department expected to release further findings as they become available.
What’s next: Arlington officials have pledged a thorough review of the incident. Residents can expect updates from the police department’s internal affairs unit and may attend a public briefing once the investigation concludes.
