Schools in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley are preparing for the 2026-2027 school year, and a local pediatrician is offering advice on how to keep kids safe from heat-related illnesses. Dr. Carl Engmann with Mercy Health in Lowell says kids are susceptible to heat-related illnesses, especially in late summer.
Dr. Engmann recommends that kids take frequent breaks in shaded areas and stay hydrated by drinking water, even when they aren’t thirsty. This is particularly important for student-athletes, who should try to schedule outdoor workouts during early morning or late evening hours when the heat risk is lower.
Wearing loose-fitting clothing with less synthetic fibers can also help keep kids cool, as these types of clothing are less restrictive and allow for better breathability. During heat advisories, Dr. Engmann suggests moving recess indoors to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
