Arkansas Park Rangers Involved in Fatal Shooting of Machete-Wielding Man

In a tragic incident near Pinnacle Mountain State Park, Arkansas State Park Rangers were involved in a fatal shooting on Monday evening. The situation unfolded when a 911 call was made at approximately 6:15 p.m., reporting a medical emergency at a home in Roland, Arkansas. Upon arrival, first responders found a man with a severe head injury.

According to a news release from the Arkansas State Police, a man identified as Matthew Garrett, 31, of Judsonia, was seen nearby wielding a large machete. The presence of the weapon prompted the first responders to withdraw from the scene and call for backup from the park rangers, given the proximity to the state park.

Three Arkansas State Park Rangers responded to the call. As they arrived, Garrett reportedly approached them with the machete, leading to the rangers discharging their firearms. Garrett was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured man was transported to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and is expected to survive his injuries. The Arkansas State Police’s Criminal Investigation Division has taken over the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
